Accused

作名词时常用复数或加定冠词 “the accused”,指在法庭上被控的一方;作形容词时多与介词 “of” 搭配,表示被指控做了某事,语气正式。

  1. “The accused sat quietly while the charges were read.” (被告在宣读指控时安静地坐着。)
  2. “He was accused of fraud after the audit found missing funds.” (审计发现资金缺口后,他被指控欺诈。)
  3. “The lawyer said the accused had cooperated fully with investigators.” (律师称被告已全力配合调查人员。)

来自古法语 “acus(er)“,与拉丁语 “ad-”(向)和 “causa”(事由、案件)相关,经演变表示提出指控。

动词 “accuse” 加 “-ed” 构成过去分词/形容词;名词用法常保留定冠词 “the accused”。

英美报道中 “the accused” 强调无罪推定前的法律身份;口语里也会说 “person accused of…”,比直呼 “criminal” 更中性。
