Prosecution

“Prosecution”常出现在法庭报道:既可以指检察机关发起的起诉行为,也可统称代表政府或被侵害一方出庭的团队;与 defense(辩方)相对。

  1. “The prosecution argued that the defendant had motive and opportunity.” (控方辩称被告既有动机也有时机。)
  2. “Witnesses for the prosecution will testify tomorrow.” (控方证人将于明天出庭作证。)
  3. “The district attorney decided not to pursue prosecution.” (地区检察官决定不予起诉。)

源自拉丁语 prōsequī(追随、继续向前),经法语 poursuite 概念传入英语 prosecute(起诉),名词 prosecution 表示起诉行为。

Prosecute 去掉 e 加 -ion 名词后缀;prosecute 本身由 pro-(向前)与 secut-(跟随)构成。

英美法系报道里高频;学习者应注意 prosecution 与 persecutor(迫害者)拼写相近但含义不同。

  • 固定搭配: “criminal prosecution” (刑事起诉), “grant immunity from prosecution” (给予免于起诉的豁免)

Prosecute 像“追着案件往前走”,整个队伍就是 prosecution。

“The prosecution presented emails that contradicted the defendant’s story.” (控方提交了与被告说法相矛盾的电子邮件。)
