Prosecution
“Prosecution”常出现在法庭报道:既可以指检察机关发起的起诉行为,也可统称代表政府或被侵害一方出庭的团队;与 defense(辩方)相对。
- “The prosecution argued that the defendant had motive and opportunity.” (控方辩称被告既有动机也有时机。)
- “Witnesses for the prosecution will testify tomorrow.” (控方证人将于明天出庭作证。)
- “The district attorney decided not to pursue prosecution.” (地区检察官决定不予起诉。)
源自拉丁语 prōsequī(追随、继续向前),经法语 poursuite 概念传入英语 prosecute(起诉),名词 prosecution 表示起诉行为。
Prosecute 去掉 e 加 -ion 名词后缀;prosecute 本身由 pro-(向前)与 secut-(跟随)构成。
英美法系报道里高频;学习者应注意 prosecution 与 persecutor(迫害者)拼写相近但含义不同。
